The Best Men's Gilets Will Let You Layer Like A Lord When Autumn Arrives

Steal a move from Italy's best-dressed men (and Marty McFly) in the sleeveless outerwear that goes with everything

There are certain corners of menswear where many fear to tread. Whether it’s down to the trend’s connotations (salmon chinos, tweed flat caps or socks and sandals) or just because wearing the item will test your self-esteem – and you’re not ready for that. Gilets/padded vests/body warmers are an outerwear layer that has received some bad press, thanks to an unfair association with rugby fans, yachting families and hikers. But the warming, down-filled layer has recently found its rightful place on the menswear shelf; through the rising trends of norm-core, gorpcore and prep 2.0 (as well as a lot of very well-dressed Milanese men, who wear theirs over tailoring the second the mercury hits single digits).

Depending on their level of insulation, the gilet can be worn in various styling situations. Heavily padded with down, it can be a toasty layer underneath your waterproof jacket or coat, that can also be easily removed and packed away if the sun decides to show. Additionally, when packed lighter with insulation, the gilet can be a great layer to add texture and tone to a fit, with those extra fisherman-style pockets to help you store all your bits n’ bobs. Given the chance, the gilet will prove itself to be the outerwear hero of autumn. That middle-ground layer, supporting you in that annoying middle-ground weather, that makes getting dressed rather difficult (we’re adults now, getting dressed should never be difficult). These are our favourite men's gilets of Autumn/Winter 2020, so you need never struggle again.
